Forum of Integral Ecology: Sustainability and Common Good in Latin America

With the publication of the Encyclical Laudato Si’, Pope Francis proposes integral ecology as a necessary holistic approach to address the complex socio-environmental problems that afflict us. It recognizes the interconnection and interdependence of natural, social, and economic systems.

Target

The Forum of Integral Ecology: Sustainability and Common Good in Latin America seeks to analyze, from a conceptual and empirical perspective, the scope and challenges of integral ecology in Latin America. It is based on some questions such as: How is integral ecology understood? How important has this paradigm become in Latin America? What implications does it have as a conceptual framework in research? How important is it as a guiding framework for actions in protections of the land? What is its relevance in the formation of the next generations? How do different communities incorporate integral ecology into their strategies, practices, and mobilizations? What are the theoretical and practical intersections between Integral Ecology and the Common Good?

This forum takes as its central reference the idea of Integral Ecology contained in the Encyclical Laudato Si', which in its Chapter 4 states that:

Since everything is closely interrelated, and today’s problems call for a vision capable of taking into account every aspect of the global crisis, I suggest that we now consider some elements of an integral ecology, one which clearly respects its human and social dimensions (137).

According to Deane-Drummond and Deneulin (2022), it can be approached from two interconnected perspectives: that of the social thought of the Catholic Church, which expands through the vision of Laudato Si', integrating the ecological dimension with the dimension of human dignity. The second perspective relates to integral ecology linked to an eco-theology that draws from both Christian theology and other religious traditions, including the perspectives of indigenous communities. Kerber (2020), on the other hand, analyzes how the concept of integral ecology has been used as a framework by various authors for several decades to address environmental issues. However, the inclusion of the term from Laudato Si', in addition to revitalizing and updating the concept, places us in the need for theoretical and practical reflection.

This is directly related to social movements and deep reflections on the environmental crisis and its solutions from a Latin American perspective The Pan-Amazon Synod (2019), the call for the defense of the Amazon, and the recognition of the importance of land for indigenous peoples and local communities (López Hernández, 2020; Chipana-Quispe 2020, Bosch, 2020) and the recognition of the multiple crises that our region is facing, but also the potential of different cultures and the committed work of individuals and organizations, position our region as an ideal territory for considering integral ecology.
